The third principle for change: It’s that “do something” piece. Those who actually get something done, who change their life, they’re able to act. They execute. We grew up in the git-r-done crowd. We value doers. I know I do. When it comes to work and having team around me, I want solution-oriented people, not excuse-oriented people.

Paul, when he was challenging us to live out our life, said this, in Phil 4:9:

“Whatever you’ve learned, received, heard, or seen in me, practice it, do it, and the God of peace will be with you.”

Have you ever thought about what keeps people from taking that step—what keeps people from doing things in their life—going out and taking little risks? Why do people not do that? I usually have hands that go up, and they’ll say, “They’re afraid.” That’s exactly right. It’s the fear factor, first of all. They’re afraid of doing something wrong or afraid of embarrassing themselves or afraid of failing or something—like it’s the end of the world.

There’s a great baseball quote. I’ll throw another one in. Ozzie Smith once said this: “You show me a man who’s afraid of embarrassing himself, show me a ball player who’s afraid of embarrassing himself,” Ozzie said, “I’ll beat him every time.” You know why? It’s because fear makes you play safe. Fear makes you play small. It kind of, like, pulls your hands into your face. You’re not free anymore. You see what I’m saying about fear? Oftentimes what we’ll do is we’ll get into analysis-paralysis and more, and it just locks us up.

The other thing—and I’ll Christianize this or Christianese this a little bit—it’s that waiting-on-God crowd, and yes, I do know that verse that says, “Those that wait on the Lord will renew their strength.” I get all that, and I know it’s significant, but hear me on this. Could it be that maybe, just maybe, in your life, or in the life of someone that you’re trying to influence, God’s waiting on you, on them, to move? What else does He have to do to get you to take a step? Does He have to burn your barley fields down? There’s a great quote from Andy: “God cares for the birds of the air, but He doesn’t drop worms in their nest or worms in their mouth.” You get what I’m saying? He can provide the worms, but some way we’ve got to step up and get something done.
